A box casting 6 of the form shown is built into the producer wall with its front plate dipping into a water seal 3. The inner side extends to within a short distance of the top of the fire-grate 2. Ash and clinker are removed by an L-shaped pricker, which is passed through the water seal and between the bars of the grate, drawing the ash and clinker under the back-plate of the casting 7 into the water seal 3. To facilitate this, the front ends 9 of the bars of the grate are preferably left unconnected, as shown in Fig. 3. The water seal may be replaced by a door.
