Balls.-To improve the flight of a golf ball, the surface of a covered or solid ball a, Fig. 1, is formed with a number of shallow isolated cavities b, which are substantially circular in plan and evenly distributed. The cavity walls are steep at their lips, and may be of an inverted truncated cone shape with a flat bottom, as in Fig. 3, but preferably the bottoms are concave, as in Fig. 5, and the re-entrant angle is rounded as at c, so that the section is nearly semi-elliptical. The whole of the surface of the ball between the cavities may be spherical ; or the parts surrounding the cavities may be sloped inwardly, as in Fig. 5, and rounded off or not as desired. As applied to cored balls, the structure is stated to be adapted to increase the tensile strength of the core.
