Making chains.-In the manufacture of weldless chains, the links are squeezed or drawn apart so as to reverse the link as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and to cause the fibre of the metal to follow the shape of the ends, as shown in Fig. 2. Circular links may be pulled out similarly into oval links to bring the fibre of the metal parallel to the bend. Such operation is stated to strengthen the link at the end without the necessity of thickening.
