Abstract

17,443. Sch÷ppner, C. Aug. 29. Variable - speed gearing in which the variation is brought about by varying the engaging pressure between friction surfaces. A driving- pulley &c. 3 loose on a driven shaft 2 is provided with gear teeth on a conical internal surface 4. Bearing-blocks 9 are pivoted upon lugs 8 projecting from a hub 5 slidably secured to the shaft 2 by a screw 6 and slot 7. Double pinions 12 connected by shafts 13 bearing upon the blocks 9 are kept in mesh with the surface 4 by springs 10. Stops 11 are also provided for the blocks 9. As the hub 5 moved to the left against the action of a spring 20, the rotating shafts 13 are made to press more strongly against the blocks 9 so that the slip is diminished and the speed of the shaft 2 increased. The actuation is effected by levers 16, 19 attached to rings 14, 17 which embrace the shaft 2 and are provided respectively with projections 15 and inclines 18 so that a relative turning produces axial motion. End thrust is taken up by ball bearings 21, 22, 23.
