Abstract

15,579. Marston, Ltd., J., Newill, W., and Morgan, J. July 29. Variable-speed gearing ; clutches.-Relates to three-speed driving-mechanism for cycles &c. As shown in Fig. 1 applied to the crank axle of a bicycle, a disk B secured to the crank and carrying planet pinions B<2> is attached to the internally-toothed ring D cf a second set of planet pinions D<2> carried by the sprocket-wheel C. For the high gear, pawls upon a non-rotatable slide H engage ratchet teeth F<2> upon an extension of the sun pinion F, so that the chain-wheel is turned through the wheels B2 and the internal wheel C<1> secured to it. By movement of the slide to the left until oppositely-disposed pawls engage teeth G<2> upon an extension of the sun pinion G, the chain-wheel is driven through the ring D and the wheels D' at low speed, while further movement of the slide brings jaws H<3> of a rotatable clutch piece H<1>, which slide between notches upon the part F<3>, into engagement with teeth G<3> so that the sun pinions are locked together but face to rotate, to give the middle or normal speed. In applying the invention to the driving- wheel hub, the chain-wheel carries the outer set of pinions and the inner toothed ring, while the inner pinions and the other toothed ring are mounted upon a member secured within the hub. The slide is operated by a cross-bar passing through slots in the hollow axle. According to the Provisional Specification, in the crank bracket arrangement, the slide H has snugs fitting into longitudinal slots in a sleeve in the bracket.
