Valves and valve-gear; valves, reversing; oscillating- cylinder engines. - The oscillating-cylinder engine shown can be worked with or without expansion during-forward working, and without expansion during backward working. The distribution is effected by a rotary cock H and a valve S mounted on the main shaft. In the. forward position shown, the motive fluid -flows through passages 1, 2, 5, 6, 11, 17, 18 to the cylinder, and the exhaust escapes by passages 19, 15, 14, 22, 9. If the cock H is turned through a right-angle, the fluid entering by passages 3, 10, 12, 16, 18 will work without expansion. The exhaust escapes through passages 14, 8, 7. In the reversed position of the cock, the fluid enters by passages 1, 4, 5, 8, 22, 14, 15, 19, 20 and the exhaust escapes through passages 21, 18, 16, 12; 10, 9. In the case of two-cylinder engines, two intermediate passages 12 together with corresponding ports 16, 10, 3 are necessary.
