Abstract

10,766. Crompton, C. May 12. Single-acting engines; cylinders; valve-chests; valves and valve gear.-A four-cylinder singleacting steam engine, adapted for propelling motor vehicles or yachts is shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The engine is built up of cylinders 9 secured in recesses in the steam chest 3, and in a plate 10, the parts being fastened by bolts 17 to the bed 15. One or more cylinders may be used, and they have a common rotary distributing-valve 4, driven by toothed gearing 41 connected to the main shaft 14, at one quarter the speed of the main shaft. Each cylinder has two admission ports 21, Fig. 5, adapted to align with a set of four ports 25 in the valve, and also has an exhaust port 22, Fig. 13, adapted to align with recesses 37 on the outside of the valve. The recesses have escape passages 60 for condensation water. The distributing-valve has an inner tubular expansion valve 70 with ports 71, adapted to align more or less with the cylinder ports, and adjusted by an external handle 74. The main valve is reversed by means of a handle 53, which moves a sliding sleeve 49 engaging, by means of studs 50, with helical cam-grooves 52 in a sleeve 48 on the valve-actuating gear 45.
