The distributing- valve is operated through the gear shown by a handwheel on the bridge or elsewhere. The admission - edges of the steam ports are inclined, and a throttle valve is placed in the exhaust pipe to make the movements of the piston slower and more even. Springs may be placed at each side of the piston to prevent it from touching the cylinder ends and impeding the entrance of steam or other motive fluid.
