Abstract
9986. Sangster, C. T. B. May 12. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to change-speed gear giving four forward speeds and a reverse drive, the gear being suitable for motor road vehicles in which motion is conveyed to the rear live axle by a longititudinal shaft, and comprises also interlocking arrangements for the system of sliding rods which operate the shifting members of the gear. Fig. 1 shows a vertical longitudinal section and Fig. 2 a transverse section through the gear box, while Figs. 3 and 4 show sectional elevations of the operating and interlocking arrangements. The driven shaft e is supported at one end in the driving-shaft e<3>, and at the other end in double ball bearings e', e<2>, and is clutched directly to the driving-shaft by the sliding member h to give the high speed. The other speeds are obtained by driving through the countershaft f carrying four fixed gear-wheels, of which the large wheel g<2> is driven continually by the pinion g on the driving-shaft, the three remaining wheels being engaged by wheels on the keyed sliding members h, i, when the latter are suitably adjusted. The reverse speed is obtained by sliding the pinion o until it gears with the pinion n<1> and the sliding gear-wheel n, when the latter is in its neutral position, the pinion o and the shaft which carries it being arranged in a manner that permits of double ball bearings for the driven shaft being arranged within the gear box. The pinion o is moved by means of a pivoted lever o<3> and link o<6>. The sliding members are each connected to and operated by one of the sliding rods b<1>, b<2>, b<3>, mounted in an extension of the gear case, and moved one at a time by an arm b, Figs. 3 and 4, the remaining two being locked. The arm b is connected to an operating-lever c by a hollow shaft c<1>, which is moved longitudinally on a fixed shaft c', so that the arm b selects one of the sliding rods b<1>, b<2>, b<3>, and is then rotated so as to operate the rod selected, the ends of the rods being formed with jaws as shown in Fig. 4. The arm b works in a slot in the interlocking frame d, which is adapted to slide longitudinally with the arm, being guided by rollers d<6>. The top of the frame slides into the jaws in the ends of the sliding rods and thereby locks the two that are not engaged by the arm b.
