Abstract

8579. Wheatley, W. H., [Ford Motor Co.]. April 22. Motor road vehicles.-In a change-speed and reversing gearing for motor road vehicles, sets of planetary gear-wheels 3, 4, 5 are mounted on axles 6 carried by a brake drum 2. The wheels 3, 4, 5 gear with wheels 9, 10, 11 mounted about the driving-shaft 1. The wheel 10 is fixed to the shaft 1, the wheel 9 is loose and is provided with a brake rim 18, and the wheel 11 is coupled to a sleeve 24 forming the driven member. The drum 2, which may form an oil-retaining casing.and may be cast in one piece, is mounted to run on shoulders or offsets of the wheels 9, 11. A leather-facedclamping- disk 30 engages a polygonal shoulder on a collar 32 adjustably mounted on a sleeve 33 fixed to the shaft 1. The disk 30 is moved by dogs 35 carried by the collar 32 and actuated by a cone 36. A leather-faced clamping-disk 21, secured to the shaft 1 and located in a housing formed by the connexions between the wheel 16 and the sleeve 24, is adapted to engage a flange on the wheel 11. If the cone 36 is brought into action, the wheels 9, 11 and the drum 2 are clamped between the disks 21, 30, and the driving and driven parts rotate at the same speed. By means of a brake 8 applied to the drum 2, the driven member rotates at a slower speed in the same direction ; on application of a brake 19 to the rim 18, the driven member rotates at a slow speed in the reverse direction. When all the parts are free as shown in Fig. 2, no movement is transmitted to the driven part. Motion may be transmitted from the sleeve 24 to a squared shaft 26 socketed in the sleeve. This shaft is made in two parts connected by a universal joint 27. A bearing 28 for the sleeve 24 is provided with a spherical enlargement which co-operates with a jacket 29 to form a casing for the joint. The shaft 1 is coupled to the hub of a fly-wheel 37 on the motor shaft 39, a distance-piece 38 preferably being interposed so as to allow the parts to be removed. The gearing is applicable for use in connexion with transmission gear of the type described in Specification No. 28,166, A.D. 1903.
