Abstract
7796. Saunders, M. April 12. Motor road vehicles.-In a three-speed gear for motor - vehicles, the extreme speeds are produced by the independent action of separate epicyclic trains. In Fig. 1, an arrangement is shown with a gearing down" train on the leftand a "gearing up" train on the right, but a modification is described in which the clutch actuating- rod 22 is positively operated by a lever pivoted to a projection from a washer 31. A sprocket-wheel 1 is secured to a sleeve 2 carrying an internally-toothed wheel 3. Planet pinions 4, mounted on spindles 7 carried by a ring 8, are in mesh with a toothed sleeve 5 upon a fixed axle 6. The ring 8 is connected through a cylinder 9 with a ring 8, which carries pinions 4 upon spindles 7, these pinions being in mesh with an internally-toothed ring 3 upon the hub &c. 10 and with a toothed sleeve 5, which may be overrun by the element 3 through a oneway clutch 11. The sleeve 5 is secured to a cylinder 12 provided with longitudinal slots in which engage projections on a sliding cylinder 13. The cylinder 13 is provided with ratchet teeth 14, which are held by a spring 15 against teeth 14 in the ring 8, and with ratchet teeth 17 adapted to engage teeth 18 on a sliding non-rotable stop 19, which also carries ratchet teeth 21 adapted to engage teeth 21 on the sleeve 5. The stop 19 may be traversed by means of a pin 27 projecting from a rod 22 in the axle 6, a chain &c. 23, and a spring 26. In the position of the stop 19 shown, the teeth 21 serve to stop the sleeve 5, and the teeth 14 serve to clutch the sleeve 5 to the ring 4. The train on the left runs solid, and the pinions 4 rolling on the sleeve 5 impart an increased speed to the ring 3. If the stop 19 is drawn to the left to disengage the teeth 21, the clutch 11 comes into action and the whole gear rotates solid. A movement of the stop 19, sufficient to cause the engagement of the teeth 18 and the disengagement of the teeth 14, locks the sleeve 5 against rotation and effects a drive at diminished speed through the cylinder 9 and the solidly-rotating train on the right.
