Abstract

7217. Lake, B. H., [Submarine Signal Co.]. April 5. Bearings, instruments for determining.-Relates to means for receiving on board ship signals transmitted through the water, and thereby determining the bearing of a lightship, buoy, shore-station, cr other source of sound. The apparatus used is shown in front elevation in Fig. 1, the circuits being shown in Fig. 4. Microphone transmitters C, D, E, F are located in water tanks on each side of the ship, only one pair C, D or E, F being used at a time, the other pair being merely a stand-by or duplicate set. By means of a switch G, either pair can be brought into action. When one pair has been selected by means of the switch G, the port and starboard microphones can be thrown alternately into the circuit of the receivers J', K<2> by manipulation of the switch H, the said circuit, including the contact between the springs j<1>, j<2>, which is made when either receiver is lifted from its hook. Assuming the pair C, D to be selected, and the port microphone C to be for the moment in use, the circuit is as follows:-The battery L, receivers J', K', microphone C, contact-springs c', g<2>, wire g<4>, contact-springs h<3>, h', springs j<1>, j<2>, and the wire l<2> back to the battery. By switching over alternately from one microphone to the other and ascertaining which gives the louder sound, it caa be determined whether the source of sound is to port or starboard of the ship. The ship's head is then swung gradually until the sound conveyed by means of the microphone is equal, the bearing of the signal station being then taken by the compass. By means of a switch M<1> and the battery M<2>, a lamp M can be illuminated. This lamp is placed behind an aperture in the case A<1>, Fig. 1, so as to illuminate a transparancy a and a coloured glass a<1>, carried by a segment P moving with the switch H. A visible signal is thus given, showing which transmitter is in use at the moment. Specification No. 13,287, A.D. 1902, is referred to.
