Abstract

16,388. Upward, A. R., and Le Mesurier, A. M. R.-C. Aug. 15. Signalling-instruments.-Relates to order telegraphs and apparatus of a like nature for transmitting railway signals &c. The orders or signals are marked on dials, similarly to a mechanical telegraph, but the dials are made semi-transparent, and are provided at the back with small compartments corresponding to the separate orders &c., each co npartment containing an electric lamp. An order is transmitted by illuminating the lamp in the compartment corresponding with the order. Two or more receivers may be connected to the same transmitter, and the transmitter is also provided with lamps, which repeat the order and show its accaracy to the operator. Fig. 1 shows a suitable arrangement of the connections for a transmitter A and two receivers A', A<2>. Each dial bears four orders, and has four corresponding compartments containing the lamps 1, 2, 3, 4, which are connected, as shown, to the contact studs G<1>, G<2>, G<3>, G<4>, and to the common return lead R. The insulated cross-bar F of the revoluble switch E, E', Figs. 1 and 2, is adapted to make contact with the studs G<1> &c., and is in contact with the switch handle C. which is connected by the lead P to the battery M. When the handle is moved to transmit an order, it completes with the contact D or D<1> of the switch the circuits of the gongs B, B', B<2>, and when the cross-bar F is moved into contact with one of the studs, say G', it completes the circuit P, C, F, G<1>, P', 1, R of the lamp 1 in each apparatus. When the handle C is released, it breaks contact with the switch, so silencing the gongs, but the transmitted order is maintained so long as the bar F is on the stud. Fig. 3 shows another form of switch, for use when the dial bears a large number of orders &c. The conducting rod or pencil D is connected by the lead P to the battery, and is provided with an insulated spring arm C connected to the gong circuits. In use, the arm C is pressed into contact with D to complete the gong circuits, and the point R of the rod is pressed on the stud corresponding to the order to be transmitted, to complete the circuits of the corresponding lamps.
