Abstract

123,317. Sarnmark, A. U. Feb. 7, 1918. [Convention date]. Locating subaqueous sounds.-The microphones 1, 1<1> on the port and starboard sides of a ship respectively a r e coupled in turn by a switch '6 to the receiver 7, the coupling of the transformer 3, 4 or 3<1>, 4<1> being varied until a minimum of sound is heard. The readings on the coupling-scales 5, 5' enable the direction to be obtained by means of tables or charts. In modified forms, one secondary 4, or one battery 2, is used for both circuits, and the sound may be varied by a variable shunting resistance instead of by the variable transformer. A second pair of microphones may be provided for use when the normal pair is out of order, and, to enable the point of minimum sound to be found, a switch may be provided in circuit with the variable resistance.
