Abstract

6816. Carl, J. March 31. Transparent and translucent materials.-Relates to a substitute for glass. A net or gauze woven from string, wire, &c. is treated with a solution of chloride of lime or ammonium chloride and sulphide and dried. The pores are then filled by passing the material through an aqueous solution containing sodium silicate, alumina, and gelatine, and then through an aqueous solution of albumen. The dried material is immersed in a solution of potassium bichromate, dried, and exposed to daylight in order to render it insoluble. The gelatine is prevented from dissolving in the above solution by a prior treatment with formalin. The yellow stain produced by the bichromate is removed by repeated washing in alum solution. Colouring-matter may be incorporated in the above ingredients, or applied to the finished article in the form of a solution containing also acetic acid and albumen, the colour being fixed by coagulating the albumen with steam.
