The tone of a banjo, zither banjo, or the like is controlled by the damping action on the vellum of two adjustable stops or plugs D, Fig. 2, which are worked by the button R on the adjustable arm Q. The lever C carrying the stops D is set in position by the screw N, is made adjustable in length, and is hinged or pivoted to the frame B, fixed to the neck perch-pole or cross-piece A within the body of the instrument. The two stops D may be fixed upon a crosshead which is raised or lowered by a lever, or the arrangement shown in Fig. 5 may be used, in which there is a separate carrier H pivoted on the lever C. A spring L, fitted to the frame or clip B, keeps the damper normally against the vellum.
