Abstract

4920. Jones, J., and Jones, C. F. March 9. Aerial machines with aerostats; aeroplanes.-In a self-propelled air-ship, an aeroplane C is arranged between the balloon A and the car D, and the car is suspended from the aeroplane by cords H passing round pulleys h' so that the position of its centre of gravity can be shifted by pulling a cord I or i<1> fixed to the aeroplane and passing round pulleys i, i'. The aeroplane consists of a central spar B suspended from the balloon by cords a and carrying transverse spars c, on which is stretched a sail C, the whole being stiffened by a spar b<2>, struts b<1>, and stays b. The sail C can be furled or extended as required by means of cords passing round pulleys to the car. The car has a prow d and a bowsprit G, and is fitted with propelling and steering gear like that described in Specification No. 17,966, A.D. 1901. Rods may be used instead of the suspending-cords H.
