Abstract

4779. Tatterson, G. W., and Tatterson, A. P. March 7. Washing.-A machine for washing wool or the like has rake apparatus to convey the wool through the vat and an intermittently-rotating fork, carried in an oscillating frame, to lift the material out of the vat and deposit it on a conveyer. A rake frame 31, 32, Figs. 1 and 2, receives a compound oscillatory movement from the rotation of shafts 35. 35 carrying cranks 33, through the the links 34 by which it is hung, and through other links 42 attached to a frame 7 which is oscillated through upper links 41. The rake shafts 43, carrying teeth 44, have arms 45 connected by a rod 46, and an extension of one arm 45 engages a slot 45. The rakes thus receive a supplementary oscillatory movement. The shafts 35, 35 are driven through shafts and bevel-gearing, Fig. 2, from the power shaft 5 upon which the frame 7 is hung. This frame carries a shaft 9 to which a fork 10 is secured and which is driven through gearing 1, 2, 5, 6 aad a shaft 3 journaled under the frame 7. The first bevel-wheel 1 is secured to a shaft 13 outside the bifurcated arm of the frame 7, Fig. 4. A pinion 11, secured to the power sbaft 5. drives a wheel attached to a lower shaft 17 through a wheel 12 running loose on the intermediate shaft 13, a pinion 14 attached to this wheel 12, and an idler 16. The shaft 17 carries a cam-wheel 18 bearing two rollers 19 and revolves once for two revolutions of the wheel 12, as do the crank shafts 35, 35. As the fork 10 recedes from the squeeze rolls 1, a pawl 26 carried by a lug 27 on the loose wheel 12 engages with a slot 24 in a ratchet-wheel 23 secured to the intermediate sbaft 13. The fork shaft 9 is thus revolved through the gearing described so that the fork 10 is turned over it and is about to descend into the vat a3 the frame 7 reaches its rearmost position. As the forward movement begins the fork dips into the vat 2 and gathers up its fibrous contents. When the fork has reached the horizontal, one of the rollers 19 is arranged to trip the pawl 26, and the shaft 13 ceases to revolve. A second pawl 29 engages the slot 24 and holds the ratchet-wheel 23 until it is itself tripped by the other roller 19 when the fork 10 falls on the feel-rolls 3 which draw off the material. The fork then begins to recede again until the first pawl 26 completes its second revolution and again engages the slot 24.
