Abstract

829,053. Cleaning strip &c. materials. DOMINEL. Jan. 31, 1958 [Feb. 13, 1957], No. 3239/58. Class 99(2). In a method of cleaning and degreasing strips or filaments of material, particularly metal bands, by means of at least one rotary brush, the brushing operation is effected in a chamber into which divided material is introduced and discharged in a continuous or intermittent manner ; the material is subjected to agitation in the chamber so as to form a cloud in which the brushing operation is effected. As shown, the cleaning apparatus comprises brushing and washing units 8, 9 and 10, each unit consisting of a cylindrical drum 11 having sides 12 and 14 formed of two fixed outer parts 15, 17 and two movable inner parts 16, 18. The drums of the units 8, 9 each have an opening 19 for the reception of a hopper 20 adapted to feed sawdust, sand, lime or powdered detergents into the drum. The wall 13 of the latter has lateral openings 21 provided at the edges thereof with flexible or resilient blades 22 forming sealing and wiping devices for the band, and a lower opening 24 for the discharge of the sawdust into a tray 25. Rotatably mounted in each drum 11 are two parallel and spaced apart spindles 30, 31 carrying annular brushes 32, 33 of wire or plastic material such as nylon, and spindles 35 carrying beaters 36 constituted by rectangular-bladed wheels. The spindles 30, 31 carry gears 37, 38 which mesh with a gear 40 freely rotative on a fixed shaft 41, and the spindles 35 carry gears 39 meshing with one another, the gear 39 located in the vertical axial plane of the drum being rigid with a sprocket 42 connected by a chain 44 to a sprocket 43 secured to the gear 40 and a sprocket 45 driven by an electric motor 47, the latter also drives a sprocket connected by a chain 51 to all the units of the apparatus. Due to angular displacement of the parts 16, 18 relative to the fixed parts 15, 17 the brushes may be moved from a position on the vertical axial plane of the drum to a second position to compensate for wear of the brushes. The washing unit 10 comprises only brushes the lower of which is constantly immersed in water in a bath 59. Bars 62 supporting guide pins 63, and pairs of guide rollers 64 facilitate feeding of the bands to the units, and return of the bands from the unit 9 to the unit 8 for a further cleaning cycle is effected by devices 65, 66.
