Abstract

Lifting - jacks. - Relates to lifting - jacks for vehicles in which the vehicle is run over the jack, the momentum of the vehicle in coming to rest operating the jack so as to lift the wheels clear of the ground. Figs. 1 and 2 show side elevations of the apparatus with the lifting-devices in their lowered and raised positions respectively. The base A, constructed preferably of metal tubing, is made up of a series of curved pieces connected together by cross-bars, the length of the frame being adjusted to suit the distance between the axles of any vehicle by nuts a<4> engaging the right and left hand threaded ends of adjacent pieces. The base is adjusted laterally if necessary by the ,wheels of the vehicle striking the rounded end over which the vehicle first travels. The base is supported when in its lowered position by castors b carried by feet d, d'. The feet are pivoted on the cross-bars a<7>, being rigidly fixed in pairs to tubes a<8> which surround the crossbars. The axle sustainers e<3>, e<4> are fixed together by rods e and pivoted to the upper ends of the feet. The front axle of the vehicle in travelling over the jack strikes the longer finger e<7> of the axle sustainer e<4>, as shown in Fig. 1, and the momentum of the vehicle causes the feet to turn about their pivots into the position shown in Fig. 2, in which the wheels are clear of the ground, the lower ends of the feet being so shaped as to engage the ground on being turned. Stops g' carried by the axle sustainers prevent further movement of the feet, and pins h may be inserted into eyes in the sustainers to prevent backward movement.
