3075. Calthrop, E. R. Feb. 14. Railways of different gauge, connecting ; rails ; transporting goods on road and rail without r e p a c k i n g.- Narrow-gauge trucks for carrying broad-gauge railway or other vehicles, as described in Specification No. 1066, A.D. 1896, [Abridgment Class Railway &c. vehicles], are adapted to carry vehicles mounted on bogies with. brakes and other undercarriage fittings which, if it were attempted to run the vehicle' directly on the transportation track, would foul the sides thereof. In order that the transportation truck may be loaded with such vehicles, while maintaining a low centre of gravity for the load, the broad-gauge track at the place of loading is laid symmetrically with respect to the narrow-gauge track, but at a higher level, so that the vehicle to be transported can - be run into position above the transportation track, and the vehicle and truck are then caased to move simultaneously and at the same speed along their respective tracks, which are inclined so that the two are brought together in a vertical direction until the wheels of the vehicle rest on the supporting troughs of the truck. To get the vehicle wheels f on to the troughs d on the trucks, the broad-gauge track 11 is led over the narrow-gauge track 10, so that, by bringing the vehicle g above the trucks A and drawing the vehicle and trucks along together until the vehicle gets on to an inclined part 13 of its track, the vehicle is raised from the rails on to the troughs d. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the rails 1 of the broadgauge track are bolted to longitudinal sleepers 6 and are of special #-section, so that, as the wheels f run on the flanges 2, the webs 3 prevent their lateral movement. The flanges 2 do not extend to the flanges e of the wheels, to permit the edges h of the troughs d to bear against the wheels and lift them from the rails. According to the Provisional Specification, the trucks may be arranged in such a position beneath the broadgauge track that, by allowing the vehicle which is to be carried to run down that track, it will come into position on the trucks and move them along the narrow-gauge track, which may be inclined downwards.
