Abstract

2642. Noble, P. W. Feb. 9. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to an arrangement for changing speed in a variable-speed gear in two distinct motions, specially applicable to motorvehicles. Wheels B, B', sliding on a feather &c. on a driving-shaft A, may be caused to engage one at a time with wheels D secured to the driven shaft C. This is effected by forks E extending from sleeves on separate auxiliary shafts F. F<1>, F<2>, These sleeves are pushed forward resiliently as the shafts F &c. are advanced by springs M, and are retracted positively by stops N. The shafts F, F', F<2> are arranged in the arc of a circle with centre at one point H<1> of a lever G, the upper end of which forms a ball G<1> adapted to engage in boxes J on these shafts. The shafts F &c. are traversed longitudinally by causing the lever G to turn about a transverse pivot H by a positive effort transmitted from a main speed lever through a bellcrank L. To change the gear, an auxiliary lever upon, say, the steering-wheel is moved so as to put in tension an elastic device connected to lugs G<2> on the lever G. Upon a subsequent withdrawal of the main lever, this device turns the lever G about the pivot H' so that the ball G<1> comes into the proper box J, and the main lever affects the new engagement. A spring K is adapted to bring the lever G normally into the mid-gear position.
