Abstract

2488. Peckham, E. Feb. 7. Brakes.-The brakes at the two ends of a railway or tramway vehicle are connected by rods so that both sets can be applied from one end, elastic cushions being interposed to cause a gradual application ; and the shoes can be adjusted relatively to the wheels. The main beams at each end of the vehicle 4, Fig. 1, carrying the shoes 16, can slide on the sidemembers 1 of the underframe, and floating beams 5 have their ends fixed in offsets on rods 10. These rods can slide in brackets 12 beneath the beams 4, and spring or rubber cushions 14 are interposed between the beams 4 and adjusting-nuts 13 on the rods. The beams 4, 5 are connected by links 6, 7 to the operating-levers 8. The shoe 16, Fig. 2, is pivoted at 20 to a bracket 15 bolted to the main beam 4, and is secured in position by bolting the flattened end of a bar 21, connected to the shoe at 22<1>, beneath the beam, adjusting-plates 23 being interposed.
