Abstract

2038. Lambert, C. J. S. Feb. 1. Dust &c., separating from air.-Air is freed from moisture, microbes, ferments, and dust by being cooled in two stages. In the first stage, the air is cooled nearly to the freezing-point of water, being passed either over cooling-pipes or other surfaces, or in direct contact with cooling-liquids. In the second stage, the air is further dried by physical contact with an uncongealable liquid which has a vapour-tension corresponding to a lower percentage of water than that which the air in its dried condition is required to contain. Any form of apparatus may be employed. For instance, in the first stage, the air may pass over pipes or metal vessels, or in contact with a cold liquid trickling over flat or corrugated walls, or over surfaces arranged in cascade fashion, or in contact with a liquid which has passed through an atomizer. In the second stage, the air may be circulated in contact with a solution of calcium chloride.
