1818. Johnson, J. Y., [Badische Anilin & Soda Fabrik]. Jan. 30. Dyes, artificial.-The colouring-matters, obtained according to Specifications No. 16,538, A.D. 1904, and No. 853, A.D. 1905, by heating benzanthrone derivatives with alkali, are nitrated by suitable means, such as by nitric acid. The products are insoluble in water or dilute acids or alkalies, but dissolve in concentrated sulphuric acid or boiling nitrobenzene. With hydrosulphites, they yield vats dyeing vegetable fibre blue shades which turn green on washing and vary according to the degree of nitration. When reduced by sodium sulphide or the like, they yield other dyes which dissolve easily in nitrobenzene, forming green solutions, and also form vats with hydrosulphites.
