Abstract

1425. Lang, R. Jan. 24. Rail joints.-The rail ends are connected by fishplates 3, 4, shaped as shown, and formed with curved lips 5, the ends of which bear against the centre of the rail. The fishplate 3 is provided with threaded holes and the plate 4 with conical holes to receive the shaped securing-bolts 14, 17. The bolts have squared or hexagonal heads 13 and similar shaped parts 15 below the conical portion 14, and they are locked by a bar 9 which has keyhole slots 12 and slides in a recess 6 in the fishplate 4. When the bolts have been screwed up, the bar 9 is moved longitudinally to cause the narrow parts of the keyhole slots to engage the parts 15 of the bolts. A lug 11 on the bent end of the bar 9 springs into a hole in the end of the fisbplate and locks the bar 9. Bolts and nuts may be used in place of the studs and screwed holes for securing the fishplates.
