Abstract

1305. Rosengren, A. A. Jan. 23. Couplings, automatic; draw-gear.-The front part 2 of a laterally-moving coupling-hook is horizontally pivoted at 5 to the back element 3, which is vertically pivoted at 1 to the draw-bar, the hook being held in a horizontal position by springs 8, and in a central position by springs 28. On impact, the two hooks are deflected and partly engaged, the coupling being completed by any usual tightening-gear. The pivots 5 enable each hook to adjust itself to the height of the opposite one. In the form shown, the tightening- gear consists of a threaded section 9 of the drawbar, which, when rotated by the worm-wheel 11, through which it is feathered, is screwed into the blocks 10, and so draws in the hook. For uncoupling, the hook is deflected sideways by a stud 15 on an arm 18 of a lever 20, which is pivoted vertically at 18<a> and kept central by the springs 28. To move the lever 20, a shaft 26 carrying a helically-slotted cylinder 33 is turned from either side of the car, and a rod 34, Fig. 5, and plates 32 are thereby moved transversely, carrying with them the springs 28 and the inner end of the lever 20. The double arrangement of plates 32 may be replaced by a single form. To allow of coupling with ordinary stock, the pin 18<b>, Fig. 1, is removed, and the arm 18 swung clear of the coupling-hook, which is then turned about the pivot 1 so as to leave the ordinary draw-hook 31 free. The front section of the draw-bar is then rotated so as to bring the hook 31 into a vertical plane, ready for non-automatic coupling. The arm 18 may be turned round on the pin 18<a> as shown, or it may be lowered.
