Abstract

Direct air-pressure apparatus. - In apparatus for raising sewage or liquids, of the type in which chambers are discharged alternately by compressed air, the valves are arranged so that the opening of one vessel to the air supply not only cuts it off from the exhaust, but, simultaneously, opens the other chamber to the atmosphere. After discharge, one chamber is kept under a slight pressure of air until the other chamber is fully charged. Each vessel is fitted with a slide valve f operated by a weighted float and lever. This valve distributes air to the outer ends of the cylinders 7, 7<a>, to the inner ends of which compressed air is supplied through the pipes 8<b>, 8<c>. The cylinder g, joining the cylinders 7, 7<a>, has pressure ports 1, 1<a>, preliminary exhaust ports 2, 2<a>, and final exhaust ports 3, 3<a>. The pressure ports are controlled by pistons 4, 4<a>, connected by rods h, h<1> to the pistons 5, 5<a> integral with the pistons 6, 6<a> and controlling the ports 2, 2<a>. The ports 3, 3<a> are controlled by the piston k, which is separate from, but actuated by, the pistons 4, 4<a>. Pressure-relief valves j, j<1> are fitted to the preliminary exhaust passages. In a modification, one vessel only is used, and the valve k is connected to the piston 4<a>, as shown in Fig. 3.
