Abstract
28,512. Cuthbert, D. W. Dec. 28. Rails are constructed with renewable tread portions bolted or secured by studs or otherwise to the web o r head of the main rail. Fig. 1 shows the renewable V-shaped tread portion D secured by studs G to the heavier flange B of the main rail. In a modified form, the tread portion is shortenel on one side and the slightly concave flange C forms the guard-rail for the wheel flanges. Fig. 3 shows an approximately triangularsectioned tread portion D, which is longitudinally reversible, as the flange C forms the guard-lip. For a railway rail of this type, the flange C has the guard portion omitted and is made shorter than the flange B. Fig. 6 shows the application to a main rail constructed in two portions. The tread portion has a depending flange H, and is bolted through the web portions of the main rail. This form of fastening is shown applied to a tread portion of similar form to that shown in Fig. 1. Corrugations may be formed on the underside of the tread portion in each case, fitting into similar corrugations on the main rail.
