Abstract

728. Holt, R. B. Jan. 11. Rails.-Auxiliary guard-rails 1 for use at curves of tramways s are made from flat bars, preferably of manganese steel, of less depth than the track rail, and are supported in recesses 4 provided on narrow cast-iron blocks 3 fitted at intervals against the web and flange of the rail. A large metal plate or washer 9, dished or curved in section, is placed under the head of the bolt at each block, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 2 shows a form in which a curved washer is fitted against a bead 10 provided on the guard-rail and a step 11 on the block 3. The guard-rail is also formed with a bead 12 on its inner face which engages in a groove in the block 3. At joints in the track rail, the plate 9 may extend across two blocks.
