Abstract

28,387. Coulter, J. Dec. 27. Lathes.-In screw-cutting and other lathes uf the type described in Specification No. 19,768, A.D. 1901, in which a reversing-shaft 11 carries stops 24, 25 which, when struck by the slide-rest 2, cause the tools to approach or leave the work as the case may be, means are provided whereby the feed-nut is put into, and out of, action by the same stops, and the saddle returned to its initial position. The action of the stops is to cause a half-rotation of the reversing-shaft, and so by means of cams 13, 14 to make both tools 7, 8 approach or recede from the work. In the improved form, the feed-nut 26 is attached to the bar 15 which actuates the tool-holder 5, and so is also put in and out of action by the stops. The saddle is returned to its initial position by a weight 29 on a chain, an air-cushion cylinder 31 being provided to minimise shock.
