  • Control Of Throttle Valves Provided In The Intake System Or In The Exhaust System (AREA)

Abstract

28,362. Albion Motor Car Co., and Murray, T. B. Dec. 27. Gas or explosive-vapour engines, carburetting in. An improvement in carburetters, in which the air inlet is controlled by a governor, as in Specification No. 13,034, A.D. 1904, is effected by having a second auxiliary air inlet working in unison with the usual throttle valve. In Fig. 1, K is the auxiliary air inlet used in the carburetter mentioned above, and a second inlet is formed at A and controlled by the port B in the piston throttle valve D which controls the supply of air to the motor through the passage E. The ports A, E are closed or entirely uncovered simultaneously. It is stated that, if one-third of the total extra air (i.e., the air admitted by the inlet ports K, A together) required at the highest speed and maximum load is controlled synchronously with the throttle valve, the object desired will be attained. Hence the area of the port A is made one-half the area of the port K. The invention may be applied to various other forms of carburetter in which an auxiliary air inlet is controlled by the speed of the motor. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the port A opens into a chamber formed by partitions C, the remainder of the circumference forming the port E. The throttle valve D works as before. In that shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the throttle valve D rotates, and has formed in its periphery ports E, B. The additional air valve, instead of forming part of the throttle valve, may be suitably operated from it by levers, gearing, and the like.
