Abstract

24,224. Colburn, H. Nov. 9. Combing-machines.-In a Noble's machine, the framework upon which the operating parts are mounted is constructed in such a manner that the several parts may be readily and accurately fixed in their desired and relative positions. The baseplate g and the segmental side walls h, h<1> are constructed integrally, as by casting, and the baseplate is secured to the faceplate of a lathe with the outer flanges k, m concentric with the spindle of the faceplate. The surfaces of these flanges can thus be turned accurately parallel with the under surface of the base-plate, and the surfaces of the edges n can be turned concentrically with the spindle of the faceplate. The under surface of the ball-race p is turned to fit upon the surfaces k, and the under surface and circular part of the peripheral edge of the gearing-plate f are turned to fit upon the surfaces m and within the edges n. The parts p, f are then secured in position, as by screws, and their upper surfaces can then be turned parallel with their lower surfaces and with the lower surface of the base-plate g. The several bearings, such as the bearings d, e for the rollers b, and the shafts c, can thus be secured in any of their varied positions with their axes accurately at right-angles to the plane in which the carriage a and other parts rotate. If it be desired to have the ball-race p adjustable so that it may be raised and lowered, the fixed flanges k are dispensed with, and the races are secured upon brackets provided with adjusting and fixing screws. If desired, the gearing-plate f only may be fitted in the manner described, and other means may be employed for supporting the parts situated above the gearing- plate. In the Provisional Specification it is stated that the side walls of the casing have strengthening- ribs in parts that have to resist forces acting thereon, such as the forces of the dabbing-brushes above.
