21,957. Mein, W., and Mein, W. G. Oct. 12. Castors. - Relates to castors for furniture, trolleys, trucks, and the like. The spindle b, Fig. 4, provided with a ball race m, is integral with or has a square end e which fits into a corresponding socket in the roller-carrying fork a, and also a tapered end, the point of which revolves in the depression j of a bearing-plate h having a cavity i, and either fitting closely against the top of the castor socket or separated from it by a rubber ring k or a spring or springs. The balls n work between the spindle and the socket f, which may be lined if desired with hardened steel, and are kept in position by a ring o screwed down or riveted to the castor edge or to the inside of the castor as shown in the Figure. The spindle itself need not be extended in diameter at its lower portion as shown. Instead of having the cavity g, the castor may terminate in a flat plate and may also be bored centrally with a small hole in order to lubricate the bearing at j. In a reverse type of castor, shown in Fig. 6, the said flat plate is rigidly secured to the spindle b. The plate w may be attached to the furniture by screws, but may also have the spindle b continued through the plate and provided with a screw thread adapted for engaging with the furniture, or instead of this may have a central pin secured to the plate and provided with a screw thread. Instead of the balls n, rollers may be utilized, and one or more rows of balls or rollers provided. Fig. 6 shows a lubricating-passage z through the spindle to the depression j in the bearing-plate.
