JAMES MONTGOMERY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GASTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1909.
Application filed July 5, 1904. Serial No. 215,327.
construction substantially as hereinafter de-! scribed and pointed out in the claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows improved caster in side elevation, with its bearingblock or mounting in central vertical section.
Referring to the drawing, 5 designates the caster-wheel and 6 the usual supporting yoke or carriage in which the wheel 1s mounted,
this yoke having an upright cylindrical spindle 7 preferably integral therewith. 8 designates a hollow cylindrical bearingblock in which the spindle 7 is journaled, said bearing-block having an upper trans verse partition 9 and a substantially flat base partition 10, both of which parts are centrally apertured to form bearings for the spindle 7 at or near its upper and lower ends, respectively. The cylindrical bearing lock extends below the base partition 10 in the form of an annular depending flange 11 fitting over the sides of a cup 12 mounted on the frame 6 and surrounding the lower end of the spindle 7. Between the upper concave surface of the cup 12 and the lower flat surface of the base 10 are disposed a series of anti-friction balls 13 around the stem 7. The upper end of the spindle 7, after having been passed through its bearing in the partition 9, is flattened down to form a head 7 which looks the spindle and caster-wheel in the bearing-block. The upper end of said bearing-block is internally threaded, as shown, to engage the threaded lower end of a vertical member 14, such as the leg of a table or chair.
15 designates a laterally-projecting lug cast integral with the depending annular flange 11 of the bearing-block. The purpose of this lug is to form a catch or hold for the nose of a spanner-wrench.
It will be noticed that the hollow bearing- -block 8 isswelled it its intermediate porition 8 to a considerably increased diameter,
this portion affording a convenient and strong hand-grip in screwing the caster onto and off the article to which it is attached, the spanner-wrench being used in association with the lug 15 in the final turn or turns Ywhen applying the device or in the initial turn or turns when unscrewing it. The spin- ;dle 7 has two separate and distinct bearings which are located at or closely adjacent to its opposite ends, being thus enabled to most effectively withstand lateral strain and maintain the spindle in a true upright position. The depending flange 11 together with the I base 10 forms in effect an overhanging cup for the ball-bearing protecting the latter to a large extent from the introduction of dust and grit.
I claim:
The combination with the caster-wheel and the yoke in which the same is mounted, of a vertical cylindrical spindle rising from the described.
