Abstract

Traction engines; motor road vehicles. -Relates to driving-gear for use in connection with h traction engines and mechanicallypropelled wagons or carriers em - ployed in rough or mountainous country. A gear wheel 3, which may be coupled to the driving-shaft 4 by a clutch 5, gears with an internallytoothed wheel 7. On the back of the wheel 7 are projections or teeth 8, which take into spaces 9 between corresponding teeth 10 on a rim 2, which is secured to the road wheel 1 of the vehicle. Springs 11 are interposed between the rim 2 and the wheel 7 so as to allow radial play, and the spaces 9 left between the teeth 8, 10 allow circumferential play. The wheel 3 is of less width than the wheel 7, to permit lateral play of the wheel 3 between guard-rings 12 secured to the sides of the rim 2. This arrangement of the gearing permits relative movement of the driving and driven parts, and thereby prevents binding between the teeth of the gearing and consequent shocks and strains when the vehicle is moving over a rough road.
