Abstract

21,601. Williams, S. Oct. 8. Collectors.-Relates to metal, wooden, or other sheaves and pulleys, such as the trolley pulleys used in electric traction, and consists in constructing them so that the cable, rope or wire working in the same is always confined to the central portion of the pulley groove, the groove being thus gradually worn down to a uniform depth and width. In one form of the invention, an ordinary sheave or pulley is used, in which are cut two slots in parallel planes at right-angles to the axis of the sheave, as shown in the sectional view, Fig. 4. The width of the central portion between the slots is made equal to the diameter of the wire &c. against which it is intended to work. In the case of metal sheaves, the grooves may be formed during the casting or moulding of the sheaves. Fig. 5 shows a modification, in which the sides or flanges of the pulley are formed separately and screwed on to the centre boss, small set-screws E preventing them from working loose. The small shoulder D determines the space maintained between the centre part and the flanges. The different portions of the pulley may be formed of different metals or other substances. In certain cases, such as for sheaves used for collecting electricity, the spices or slots are filled with some soft yielding material such as asbestos or plaster of Paris, in order to prevent access of foreign substances.
