Abstract
18,746. Goodsell, H. H. Aug. 30. Annealing-furnaces; furnaces for oxidizing metal surfaces.- Apparatus for annealing sheet iron or steel and for oxidizing its surface consists of a chamber 4, Figs. 1 and 1<a>, heated by a flue 5, and a water pan 41 arranged at the cooler part of the flue 5. The steam generated in the pan 41 passes through the chamber 4 towards its hottest end, and the sheets, fed from external rotating rollers 31 on the flue 5, are conveyed through the chamber in the opposite direction over rotating rollers 19, and thence by rotating rollers 54 through water 44 in the pan 41 and on to drying-rollers. The rollers 1<a> are supported as shown in Fig. 3, and their tubular ends are kept cool by water supplied through branch pipes 21, 22, the heated water flowing away through troughs 24, 25. The walls of the flue are provided with passages 8,9, 10 in order that the different portions may expand and contract equally. The flue may be heated by the combustion of natural gas, or by the combustion gases from a furnace or stove.
