Abstract

18,385. Reed, T. A. Aug. 24. Steering-gear.-A buffer for lessening the shock when a ship's rudder is struck by heavy seas, consists of a cylinder b, Figs. 1 and 3, formed in one with a bracket a, and taking a hollow plunger c, in which is a helical spring d. A retaining-bolt e attached to the plunger passes through the spring and the closed end of the cylinder, and carries lock-nuts which are adjusted so as to maintain the spring in a state of partial compression. A washer h and resilient packing g are interposed between the nuts and the recessed end of the cylinder. A quantity of semi-fluid lubricant, such as vaseline or grease, is placed in the cylinder. When used for transmitting the motion and absorbing the shocks between a quadrant mounted on the rudder head and a tiller keyed thereto, two buffers such as those described are secured to the quadrant, one on each side of the tiller, with the plungers in contact with the latter.
