Abstract

17,009. Lake, H. H., [Jacobson, J.]. Aug. 3. Producing relief photographs.- Relates to a process for obtaining highrelief effects from photographic reproductions for advertising or artistic purposes. The pattern, Fig. 1, in which the figures or characters are upon a white background, is photographed, and the negative intensified and finished to give an opaque back ground as in Fig. 2. This negative a is photographed under oblique illumination with a background of a sheet of white paper and results in a negative b, Fig. 4, in which the letter is shaded along the edges by the shadow of the negative a on the white backgrounds. The negative a is also photographed with the film side of the negative away from the lens to give a reversed negative c, Fig. 5, and this negative is subsequently bleached so as to have a white character upon a transparent background. The films of the negatives b, c are placed together with or without a plain or decorated sheet of material at a short distance away and the combination is photographed again under oblique illumination to give a shaded letter, while the letter will seem to cast its shadow on and to stand out from the background. The letters on the negatives b, c may be slightly mismatched, in which case a relief-photo as in Fig. 7 will result.
