Abstract

Bending; flanging.-Plates for boilers and tanks are dished and flanged either at the same or at separate operations in a machine provided with central rotatable clamping-heads 83, 108, Fig. 3, radial bendiog-rollers 71, supporting-rollers 101, 115, and driving and flanging rollers 122, 127, 151. The head 83 is provided with a ball race and is retained in place in an angular shaft 78 by a twopart collar 85. The shaft 78 is carried in a casing bolted to cross-beam3 54, Fig. 5, extending between side rails 51, which are pivoted to standards 53 and united at their ends by a front rail 52. Curved guides 57 are carried on the rail 52 for segmental frames 61, which are pivoted to brackets carried by one of the cross-beams 54 and gear with pinions 59 rotated by a hand-wheel and mounted on the rail 52. The segmental frames are slotted to carry the mountings of the rollers 71, which are linked together and are connected by a swivel to hand-wheels and adjusting-screws 64. The whole top frame 51, 52, 54 is raised for the insertion of a plate by means of screwed rods 49 engaging sockets mounted in standards carried on a base 38, which supports the standards 53 and is adjustable on the machine bed by racks and pinions. The plate to be dished is centered by arms 94 depending from and threaded on radial screws 90 geared together by means of a bevel-wheel 79 loose on a journal on the shaft 78. The rollers 101 are carried in frames bolted to radially-arranged plates 95 which also support a table 103 carrying the head 108 and a series of removable rollers 105. A standard 41, adjustably secured to the foundation within recesses 40 in the base 38 and the bed, provides pivoted support for arms 111 of a frame 110 which carries the driving and flanging gear. The rollers 115 are supported by the arms 111. The roller 122 is mounted on a shaft 121 supported in bearings which are carried by the piston of an air cylinder 120 and slide in guides on the frame 110. The shaft 121 is geared to the roller shaft. 126 driven from a shaft 130 and geared to a set of reversing-bevels at 136, Fig. 4, a clutch 144 enabling pinions 145, which engage curved racks 146 secured to the foundation, to be driven in either direction to raise or lower the frame 110. The flanging-roller 151 is carried by a bracket rigidly mounted on a cross-shaft geared to a second cross-shaft, provided with a hand-wheel, by segmental gears 152, 153.
