Abstract

13,219. Watkins, S., [Electric Boat Co.]. June 11. Specific-gravity estimating-apparatus.-A hydrometer used in connection with apparatus for regulating the buoyancy of submarine torpedo boats, whereby the operator is enabled to adjust the amount of reserve buoyancy to any condition or change of specific gravity of the water of flotation, consists of an upright, closed cylinder 29, Fig. 4, fitted with drain cocks 32. The float 33 has circumferential vanes 34 to prevent vertical vibration, and has fitted to it a pointer, traversing a fixed scale 37 and an adjustable scale 39. The scale 37 is graduated to indicate the difference in displacement of the vessel in salt and fresh water, and the scale 39 is of sufficient length to read, on each side of its zero, a change in displacement equal to the reserve buoyancy.
