Abstract
147,012. Rovetto, F. June. 7, 1919, [Convention date]. Displacement and trim, indicating.-Relates to means for determining the position of a ship with respect to the level of the sea without leaving the room of the ship in which the instruments are placed. For this purpose, the longitudinal inclinations are observed on a spirit level, the transverse inclination by a pendulum indicator, and the draught on a vertical line at a known distance from the centre of gravity by means of graduated sea-water tubes 2 and 7. The tube 7 is connected to the tank of a salt-water manometer and the tube 2 to the sea through a Kingston valve. The upper ends of both tubes lead into a closed water tank 4 from which water can be drawn through the pipe 6 to bring the water level in the tubes into an upper room of the ship for convenient reading. The draught readings and observed inclinations are then transferred to a chart showng an external side view of the ship by means of a transparent gauge, such as celluloid, marked with the shapes of the water lines at various transverse inclinations of the ship, and with a scale of the longitudinal inclinations of the ship. The readings then obtained on the chart give the points of the external hull of the leaking ship which are in contact with the water surface, and also the new fore and aft draughts of the ship.
