Abstract

13,111. Maher, C., and Moore, E. G. June 10. Cutting - up and slicing.- Relates to a machine for cutting and slicing the sides and the rims of the lids of chip boxes from tubes. On the revolving table 6 are a number of pillars 21, on which the tubes to be cut are placed. In a part of its course, each pillar expands to grip the tube, and at the same time rotates, carrying the tube against a number of fixed cutters 33. The tube then contracts, enabling the cut rings to be removed. The table 6 is mounted on the spindle 4, which is driven by worm gearing actuated by the belt 9 from the driving-shaft 11, and is provided with a clutch operated by the handle 14 and rod 13. The endless rope 17, passing over pulleys 16, 18 and guide-pulleys 19, engages the wheels 20 on the spindles 22 of the pillars 21, and provides the rotation of the pillars. Each spindle 22 has a tapered upper end, surrounded by a split sleeve preferably of hard brass, which is again surrounded by an outer sleeve 25 of boxwood or other material, divided vertically into three parts and held on the inner sleeve by rubber bands lying in grooves. The sleeves are further secured together by pins to ensure the rotation of the outer sleeve. The pillars run on ball bearings. The end 28 of each spindle 22 is pressed downwards by the spring 29, and engages the cam-race 30, which raises the spindle to collapse the pillar during part of its course. The knife-holders 32 are clamped to the platform 31, and are adjusted by vertical and horizontal screws 34, 35. The pulley 18 is mounted on a spindle 37 carried by the arm 38, the elbow 39 of which supports the weight 40. This arrangement keeps the tension of the rope 17 uniform. The pulley 18 is capable of slight side motion on its spindle.
