GRINDING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1922.
Application filed June 10, 1921. Serial No. 476,438.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR KIRKLAND, citizen of the United States, residin at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of ichi an, have invented a certain new and useful mprovement in Grinding Machines, and de clare the following to be a full, clear, and. exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, Whi form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a grinding mav chine and a special object of my improvements is to provide an improved machine for grinding cylindrical machine parts that shall be simple and compact. I accomplish this object in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly broken away of an apparatus embodying my invention.
F ig. 2 is an end elevation of the same looking from the right of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detailed View to an enlarged scale.
a is the base of the machine. Upon this base is mounted a standard as carrying a shaft 5 which shaft may be rotated by an electric motor or any suitable source of power. 0 and 03 are pulleys fixed upon the shaft 6.
e is a standard adjustably mounted upon the base a and carrying bearings e e at its upper portion. f is a grinding wheel secured upon a rotatable shaft f which shaft rests and rotates in the bearings 6 e f is a pulley upon the shaft f. of 1s a belt passing over the pulley c and f g is a standard or support rising from the base a and provided with an interior roller bearing h is an annular wheel which I make of the same material as the grinding wheel 7 so that it may firmly engage the work to move the same. This is fixed to a carrier ring 72. which ring is adapted to be inserted and fixed in the bearing 9 k is a pulley connected with the carrier ring-faso as to rotate the same. dh is a belt around the pulley dand the pulley it. vi is a rider pulley adapted to maintain the tension of.
the belt dh.
The standard at may be made adjustable so as to regulate the tension upon the belt of. In Fig. 2 the broken line GLf indicates the center line of the pulley f and shaft 7,
center line of the anand CLh indicates the nular wheel h and carrier ring if. It will be noted that there is a slight angle between these center lines.
The grinding wheel f is located within the annular wheel h.
j is a holding apparatus.
m is the work rest bar. This bar is supported and positioned by resting in the holder j. The bar m is octagonal in cross section.
k is the cylindrical piece to be ground. This is placed between the interior wall of the .annular wheel it 'and'the periphery of the grinding wheel f and is supported upon one of the surfaces of-the work rest.
' smooth and accurate.
Inasmuch as the contacting surfaces between the work la and the annular wheel I: curve in the same direction, a firm hold is obtained by the annulus h to rotate the work 10-, While the contacting surfaces of the work and the grinding wheel f move in opposite directions and a good grinding efl'ect is obtained.
The shaft of'the holding bar m afiords a number of holding surfaces. If one surface becomes injured or abraded the bar is rotated about its axis to bring another surface in position to receive the work 5:. The bearing 9 for the annular wheel h is large and assures a firm and rigid support, moreover, it is in the same plane as the points of contact with the work is. I
The rapidly rotating grinding wheel 7 is enclosed so that safety to the operator is secured.
Claims:
1.'In a grinding machine, the combination of a grinding wheel, and an annular wheel, the first named wheel being located within the annular wheel, the parts being located so as to receive the work between the periphery of the first named wheel and the inner wall of the annular wheel and operate upon said work.
2. In combination with the apparatus of nula r wheel resting in said bearing, said claim 1, a bearing of greater diameter than bearing being in the plane of contact bethe opening in said annular wheel, said antween the work and the parts operated 10 nular wheel resting in said bearing. thereon.
In combination With the apparatus of In testimony whereof, I sign this speciclalm 1 a bearing of greater diameter than fication. the opening in said annular wheel, said an- ARTHUR KIRKLAND.
