Abstract

12,816. Brayshaw, S. N. June 7. Tempering ; cementation.-A bath or melt used in hardening steel tools or other articles consists of ground sodium and potassium chlorides mixed in such proportions that the whole melts at a temperature between 680‹ C. and 770‹ C. The mixture remains as a glaze over the surface of the article, when removed from the bath, and keeps it hot until immersed in water. Potassium ferrocyanide, or other carburizing-agent, may be added to the bath in order to alter the composition of the steel. The temperature of the bath may be varied by varying the proportion of potassium chloride.
