Abstract

11,348. Roberts, D., and James, C. May 17. Gas or explosive-vapour engines, governing. The governor alters the stroke of the oil-pump plunger and thereby regulates the supply of oil to the cylinders. This method of governing is an improvement in explosion engines of the kind described in Specifications Nos. 7146 and 15,994, A.D. 1890, No. 3909, A.D. 1892, No. 6933, A.D. 1896, No. 17,839, A.D. 1897, No. 1426, A.D. 1898, Nos. 5914 and 10,849, A.D. 1900, and No. 7480, A.D. 1902. In Fig. 1, an arrangement is shown in which the governor f acts, through a fork g, lever h, rod i, lever arms j, l, and rod m, on the link d attached at one end to the pump plunger c and at the other end to a piece capable of sliding over a quadrant e, which receives its motion from the air-admission cam through a rod q and lever n with its fulcrum at o. A modified form of quadrant is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. It is stated that a single governor may govern an engine of several cylinders, and that; in the case of four cylinders working on the four-stroke cycle, the governor will not have more than the working resistance of one pump at a time to overcome.
