Abstract
10,439. Chivers, C. May 6. Bookbinding.-Each section of a book is perforated with three rows of holes, so that, when each section is sewn or secured in place, it is attached to the two next sections on both sides of it. In Fig. 1, a number of such sections a, b, c, d, e, f, g, are shown, each having three rows 1, 2, 3, of perforations. These holes are oblique through the sections, that is, they are not perpendicular to the sheets of paper forming the section. The holes of rows 1, 3 are arranged to be in vertical lines, with those of row 2 in between. The sections are so placed for stitching that, in the alternate sections a, c, e, g, &c., the outermost holes are the pairs of holes in rows 1, 3, while in the other sections the outermost holes are the single ones in row 2. If the sections a, b, c, d, e have been sewn together and a fresh section f is to be added, the thread x is brought from section c over sections d, e, and is passed in at the right-hand lower hole of the end pair of section f and passed through the end hole of row 2 of section e and end hole of row 3 of section d. It is then taken back over the top edges and passed through the lower hole of the second pair on section f, and the process repeated. The two end sections at each end are not fully sewn and may, if necessary, be further secured in any convenient way.
