Abstract

10,153. Wellman, W. May 3. Railways, systems of; platforms.-Consists of a railway system designed to increase the capacity for heavy suburban traffic. Each train is composed of corridor cars A, Fig. 2, with seats, and platform cars B at regular intervals corresponding to the distances between the station platforms C. Each train is long enough to extend past several stations, and in the preferred arrangement there is but one train, which is endless and occupies the whole length of the " circle." In operation, the train stops with its cars B opposite the platforms C, and as the entry and exit of passengers can then take place over the whole length of each platform C, such movement is quickly performed, the passengers after the train is again in motion, distributing themselves among the cars A. Preferably, the train runs a distance of several stations before stopping again, and during the journey the passengers walk to or towards the platform car which will stop opposite their destination station. To facilitate this self-sorting of the passengers, the stations and platform cars may be divided into corresponding sets indicated by numbers, colours, &c. To control and facilitate the movement of passengers between the platforms C, B and vice versÔ, transverse hand-rails may be fitted on the former and gates on the latter, and the platforms may each be divided into an exit and an entry part by transverse partitions which are movable to suit the variations of the traffic at different times in the day.
