Abstract

9866. Lake, H. H., [Carloni, C.]. April 29. Brakes for cycles &c. Relates to improvements in brake mechanism such as is described in Specification No. 26,977, A.D. 1902, whereby the brakes are adapted for instantaneous or continued application. The brake is applied by a flexible cable d, Fig. 1, attached to a pivoted lever c on the handlebar a. The cable terminates in a stud f bearing against a lug e on the lever, by moving which the brakes are instantaneously applied. A clamp g engaging a shoulder on the stud f has attached to it a screw h on which works a winged nut j bearing against a wall and sleeve i on the lever. By rotating the nut j, the cable can be shortened or lengthened to regulate the brake, or the brake gradually and continuously applied. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the screw h is fixed to the nut p and works in a stirrup l to actuate the cable. In another form, shown in Fig. 5, the nut is rotated by bevel gear and a hand-wheel m, and, in another modification, the nut extends through slots in the lever as in an adjustable spanner. The cable may be similarly operated by an internally screw - threaded handle mounted loosely on the lever, or by a nandle q, Fig. 8, combined with a stirrup as shown in Fig. 4. Instead of a stirruppiece, a nut r, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, may be used.
